'Dos and Don’ts of Practicing in Denver District Court – Practical Tips for Both Civil and Criminal Attorneys'
 
Panelists will discuss some of the hot-button issues affecting practice in their court including tips for drafting pleadings, resolution of discovery disputes, and the new rules of civil procedure. The participants will have the opportunity to discuss these issues directly with the panelists as part of the Q&A portion of the event.
 
Panelists:
Judge Shelley Gilman was appointed to the Denver District Court bench in February 1998. Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Gilman practiced in the several county trial offices and in the appellate division of the Colorado State Public Defender and then was in private practice in Denver. Judge Gilman graduated from the University of Illinois and received her law degree from the University of Denver College of Law. Judge Gilman has served in all divisions of the Denver District Court
 
Judge John Madden joined the Denver District Court bench in July 2006. He has presided over Civil, Criminal and Domestic dockets and is currently in a Civil courtroom. This past summer, he also presided over the Fero’s Bar death penalty case. In addition to serving as a judge, he teaches each year at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, teaches basic and advanced trial practice at DU Law School, coaches the CU undergraduate mock trial team and is a co-chair of the Colorado Bar Association Highs School Mock Trial Committee.
 
Judge Edward Bronfin was appointed to the Denver District Court bench in April 2008. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Bronfin was in private practice in Denver, primarily in the areas of medical malpractice and products liability. Judge Bronfin graduated from St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and received his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law (Order of St. Ives). Although currently Judge Bronfin has a criminal docket, he has served in all divisions of the Denver District Court.
 
Judge Ross Buchanan joined the Denver District Court in January, 2014. He was initially assigned to a domestic division, and now presides over a civil division. Prior to his appointment, Judge Buchanan had a general civil trial practice for 31 years in Denver, where he specialized in personal injury and product liability matters, and also handled commercial disputes, employment matters, professional negligence, insurance bad faith and civil rights cases. He graduated from Occidental College and Northwestern University School of Law.
